This is hardly original literary analysis, but (as much as I love it) LOTR is decidedly a reactionary work. Part of its appeal to the '60s left was that it was so reactionary it jarred with the contemporary right. The left-wing love of trees (and Ents) only really got going after LOTR's publication.

Alexander Falilyev had an interesting article in Studia Celtica a couple of years ago. I'm not entirely convinced by the second note or the older arguments it draws on but it's still very much worth a read.
