An issue at the core many modern disputes is the Luddite problem. Oligarchs look at workers as legacy costs draining their wealth through tax dollars or social goals like equality. Workers fear being called unneeded and replaced by artificial intelligence or new priorities. All see a dark future.

I’ve always assumed diversity goals are pursued and respected when choosing among candidates who have roughly the same “merit.” I sincerely doubt that many bosses are aware, smart and discerning enough to select the “meritorious” candidate in many cases. Human nature is too full of biases.

…Do we ever hear someone say,”we had equal qualifications and I accept the decision to give it to the other person.” No. We hear crocodile tears about unfairness, an unfairness tacitly experienced by millions of minorities over the ages. Well, it’s not so tacit now and “merit” is how the push back.

Using “merit” as a fig leaf to disguise the impetus for attacks on diversity, equity and inclusion tells me that politicians have become more skilled at hiding racism that was far more blatant in prior generations. …
