Wild Wishes

Be wary of wild wishes less they learn to bite. But what's the harm of wishing in darkness for some light? Well wishing can turn to wanting and wanting into need; then need into a yearning, who knows where that might lead. Discontent and craving for what you've never had can nibble at your heart to turn your whole life sad.

Now I watch the wastrel boys splash their days against the wall. Remembering how once, I too quaffed at life: took greedy gulps from any handy pump. If only I had let it all flow gently across my senses: savoured each precious texture, hue and flavour, to brighten the shadows of my memories.

Overwhelm The way the sky bled this morning should have warned me; I could have armed myself with a plaster against the gushing of the day. In the kitchen alone, all was calm. Looking down, not at the screaming sky, at my breakfast bowl: on a set-square mat, spoon perfectly perpendicular. Humming to the tune in my head, la-di-da. I breathed, all was well — until it wasn't. Blam! blam! a cupboard door: she's up early, letting me know loudly what I should, shouldn't, ought, must do differently - or not. The radio, switched on, grating against my head-tune. Then questions I can't handle so early, a ratchet clicking, clacking, tensioning syllables elevate themselves up with my shoulders, wrap around my neck, finger beneath my skull. I try to focus on a puzzle, reset, disengage, but then the dog is barking, scratching at the door; on the radio they're talking, laughing inanely, my feet try to rescue my ears, carry me out, up to the loo, lock the door, imagine I'm not there.

The bitter fruits of winter berries withered on a vine the cold morning you left me without a warning sign The last reluctant leaves have rusted on the trees like me, they're left to hang forlorn in a frosty breeze Soon there will come the snow to cover this weary scene and I, in icy slumber will ponder in a dream Some day the sun will shine to herald in a thaw and as the fields turn green my heart might beat once more
