Yup! There are still a lot of folks who dress up for the JW and general after show socializing.

General networking can also be good, but other events like GDC would be far better if you want to spend more time with devs than execs or business types.

It really depends on what you are looking for! DICE is great if you are looking to start the pitch process ahead of GDC, or if you want to network with clear business goals in mind (e.g. see who is funding projects, try to meet investor types, etc.).

That being said, I think adding realistic pieces isn't necessarily a bad thing to have in your portfolio, but having more stylized art pieces will only increase your chances with studios that are looking for that exact style.

In your specific case, if you're getting turned down by studios who are looking for artists with experience in realism it's not because of the quality of your work. It may just be that they are receiving applications from a lot of artists who specialize in realism, so the focus is on them instead.

At that point, it just becomes a matter of recruiters figuring out how many people you can actually slot into the interview pipeline, and this greatly varies depending on the size of the company.

However, there are so many people looking for work right now that studios are most likely seeing a lot of applications from folks who have the technical proficiency, experience, and are an exact stylistic match.

A few years ago, I would have said that including pieces in your portfolio that are outside of your usual style would have been fine since there seemed to be more of an openness to take a chance on someone who had the technical chops and experience but wasn't an exact stylistic match.
