At some point, this just becomes laughable. The top two have spent the summer in a ridiculous arms race that most of the rest of the league are prevented from doing.

This is grim. Teams that were able to compete last year, such as Villa and Newcastle, being hamstrung by the financial entrenchment of FFP, whilst the Arsenal, City, Liverpool and Chelsea spend freely.

Obviously the answer is going to be “rampant greed”, but how can there be a justification for some clubs receiving ten times the “participation” money than others?
The Club World Cup, a means to address/redress the economic inequalities of world club football? Perhaps not, judging by the calculations of @swissramble.bsky.social. Full analysis here: swissramble.substack.com/p/fifa-club-...

He’s off to play with an expensively assembled group of talented players in a famous stadium packed with home fans who might turn on him if he does something that displeases them. Sure it will be completely alien to him.
For Trent Alexander-Arnold, the attractions of a move to Real Madrid barely need restating.

But equally clear are the things he stands to lose — as illustrated, in many ways, by the emotional rollercoaster of his final weeks as a Liverpool player.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and the leaving of Liverpool
The emotional rollercoaster of Alexander-Arnold's final weeks illustrate what he stands to lose, whatever the obvious attractions of Madrid.

Local lad plays countless games for the club, winning decent haul of trophies in the process. And gets booed for daring to want to try something different. Charming.

Very, very much this. Savage, Ferdinand, Neville etc and the irreversible slide towards partisan clipbait. Grim.
on the triumph of tribalism. the club lens has consumed the way we watch and talk and write about football these days. punditry, social media, even journalism. to the point where performative tribalism has become the only acceptable way of "enjoying" football
