Working as a self-employed handyman after many miserable years as a writer. Vinyl collector, reader, restorer of soulful vehicles.
Door latch is fixed.

Unfortunately, I ascertained that I have a leaky heater core. It’s been dripping slowly for months. You all might be able to see that the passenger mat is damp. I will go ahead and order that. This car gets driven; I want to keep it nice.

Latch cleaned up like new. Perfect shape.

Been having a little fun figuring out why the Mustang driver’s door won’t latch. It’s not the latching mechanism, confounding my expectations, but instead the push-button handle. Should be a free fix, too.

We are absolutely playing. Bolt hasn’t felt this well since June.

Continuation of the story which no one will care about: I drove two hours in my 66 Mustang to visit my sick brother. Took that car because my other cars are broken…

Ready to head home and the driver side door won’t latch closed. I bought a bungee cord to keep it shut as I get home.

That’s the overpass that leads to Beaver Crossing Nebraska

This is Waverly Nebraska. Five minutes from my house.

I’m thinking about doubling the size of our vegetable garden from 4x8 feet (plus some pots) to 8x8 feet (plus some pots.

Photo: picture of my son helping me build the first enclosure five years ago and the finished thing.

This is for the folks who asked how Bolt was doing. He’s doing great. Back to his old self as a senior dog.
January 29, 2025 at 1:01 AM
Here’s Bolt. Surgery was late Thursday morning (US Central time). Btw, I take his collar off for scritches every three or four hours. The best dog since wolves were tamed.

Drugged but not happy.
January 16, 2025 at 11:07 PM
Bolt survived surgery.

Thanks. We’re just about to leave. It’s still pitch black except for a glow to the East. 40-minute drive to Omaha.

Removed the brace that cradles the very front of the cab on the Galaxie. It’s spot welded to the vertical portion and curves underneath to support the floor — except that part has rusted away. Tomorrow, I’ll take that brace off the parts car and weld it on the titled car.
January 15, 2025 at 2:48 AM
The floor brace patch has been in there a couple days. Shaping and welding in the floor steel that covers that brace (the white painted stuff). It’s compound curves, so I’m making it with two pieces.

This guy has an eye removed on Thursday. I was told he has a heart murmur. So I’m losing my mind, of course.
January 12, 2025 at 11:49 PM
I think I’m done working on the Galaxie tonight. That hurt.
January 12, 2025 at 1:05 AM
The one on the left came out of the car I’m restoring.
January 10, 2025 at 10:49 PM
To this point, I’ve mainly done small-ish repairs: holes in drywall, painting, faucets, drains, outlets, repairing rotten soffit, trim and decks. I have designed and built new basement and deck stairs, though. I’ve built various shelves and storage solutions. Some furniture refinishing. Etc.
January 10, 2025 at 3:57 PM
Pre-formed driver-side (left) patch welded in. Solid welds, but in the interest of esthetics I’ll titivate them later. I need to cut the floor brace out of the parts car and weld it in (lying on my back — not fun) and then shape a patch that covers that rectangle. It has some complex curves.
January 10, 2025 at 1:36 AM
I’ll shuffle those dashes to build the best one possible. Note the 1990s/early 2000s stereo that had been hacked into the dash.

The main car was on the road from ‘62 to 2017 — which explains its decent mechanical condition and the terrible rust. He kept it driving as the frame & body disintegrated.

View from the left-side backseat area to driver (left side) foot well. Main patch gets welded in tomorrow. Just resting there in second photo.

At the vet’s for Bolt’s eye. Sorry about the despair last night. These are dark days, personally as well as nationally.
January 8, 2025 at 4:17 PM
Fuck this too
January 8, 2025 at 3:10 AM
Fuck. This.
