I love this new feature from the folks at @defector.com. I call this Canucks Sadness (I couldn’t in good conscience put Bourdon in there, even if he fits better than Umberger)

My most recent read was The Librarianist by Patrick deWitt. I kept expecting some big payoff while I was reading, and it never came. In reality, a big payoff wouldn’t have fit with the character of book. I enjoyed reading it all the same.

I then read Meet Me at the Lake by Carley Fortune. I liked the inclusion of a ska band. More ska representation is needed in literature. The book was good, but not as good as her first one, Every Summer After.

The next book I read was Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin. This one came to me with a tonne of hype, but it didn’t quite live up to it. I enjoyed reading it, the characters were great, but the book was overall good but great.

I read Carrie Soto is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid. Of the books set in the same universe, this one is better than Malibu Rising, but not as good as Daisy Jones or Evelyn Hugo. The descriptions of tennis in the book were questionable.

I then read The Crash Palace by Andrew Wedderburn. I enjoyed the topic and themes of the book, and it was pretty well written. However, it felt almost like part of the book was missing or unfinished.

I read Ms. Demeanor by Elinor Lipman. I honestly don’t remember much about this book, but I know I enjoyed it.

I read Book Lovers by Emily Henry.
It’s a great romantic comedy. Light and easy to read, with a strong cast of likeable characters.

The first book I read this year was Normal People by Sally Rooney. Nothing I’d read before or since has done as good a job of capturing the emotions and anxieties of being 18-22 years old. I loved it
