If you want incremental progress you fund applied research (i.e. industry focused). If you want incredible world shattering, quantum level progress, you fund pure research.

I went to the movies that day and when I came out Gough was gone. The whole thing stank - not just Gov General, but Bjelke-Petersen's choice of senate replacement, CIA, MI-6 and Royal Family involvement, and of course the usual conservative forces or Murdoch et al. Still impacts Labor today.

The biggest problem when I worked in that sector was the lack of funding from the Govt. The academics were very much overworked and the Govt requires so much paperwork that they can get buried in it.

Uni's are billion dollar businesses (or close to). Whether you call them VCs, or CEOs etc. I would have thought wouldn't make much difference. They have an analogous corporate structure: Chancellor = Chairperson; Council = board. Pretty conventional really.
