My conspiracy theory:

They have a bunch of cool stuff ready and let it sit on a shelf to wait for interest to fade, then slap it down at an opportune time as a guaranteed way to boost sales.

Essentially, drip feeding us until we get bored, and then they reveal bangers like this to recapture us 🤔

Absolutely is! The best thing we can do for these kinds of attacks is update our software frequently and utilize a firewall.

Luckily, these attacks leave a VERY large trail, so they're very easy to detect!

This is why agencies tend to only focus on the REALLY bad criminals (or the easy ones) because it'll be worth the effort to find the needle in the haystack.

Technically, yes. You can observe the source IP, and a governmental agency can demand records from that IP's service provider to learn the source. Almost always, it will just be another infected host.

You can keep tracing, but it's often a large chain of hosts spread across international borders.
