Days 19-28 (June 13-21): We had a revelation at work that led to a spiral of discovery and change. I haven't had time for anything related to gamedev unfortunately. Still listening to the udemy course at the gym though, but honestly more focused on AI at the moment.

Day 18 (June 12): Did literally nothing related to gamedev or game design today, sadly. Work is just too stressful and I'm too tired. Reading the game design book by Tynan Sylvester though tonight to try and unwind. It's good, but a bit too verbose, to be honest. Not yet sure if I'm learning much.

Day 17 (June 11): Still no time for prototyping. I listened to the Udemy courses but didn't pick up much. Really tired and struggling with work right now. Listened to some light game design podcasts about movement and positive vs negative reinforcement in players though.

Day 16 (June 10): First day in a while I wasn't able to do any actual work on the prototype. Work was just too busy. Thankfully on my walk today I listened to a Udemy lecture about Animation Tree nodes which was helpful.

Previously I used Limbo AI for state machines. Animation Trees seem simpler.

Day 15 (June 09): Continued finishing the prototype UI menus. Refactored a few things to streamline menu functionality. Set up a save/load system and some basic statistics tracking per run. Also trying to tune enemy spawning and movement a bit.

Day 14 (June 08): Focus was on setting up the UI of the prototype. Main menu, game over menu, pause menu. All that. goal was to make reusable templates for future prototypes so spent a while on it. Surprisingly easy but also easy to turn it into a mess without proper decoupling.

Day 13 (June 07): Did some refactoring of the code in the prototype to make it easier to read and understand in certain areas. Bit of a headache and tired today; alone with the kid.

Day 12 (June 06): Continued working on the prototype, implementing scoring and player health. Pretty straightforward. Can already feel motivation waning but thankfully the Udemy course helps to keep things fresh.

Day 11 (June 05): Focus today is on figuring out and finishing up targeting and scoring in the little prototype I'm working on. Continuously impressed with LLMs to help script, but also concerned about how I can best learn.

Day 10 (June 04): Focus today is on fleshing the prototype out a bit further. I think that I also need to take a step back and plan my weeks out a bit further to avoid burnout.

Have to say, though, following the Udemy course is really helping give my learning a structure!

Day 9 (June 03): Continuing on the prototype. Starting to develop an approach to pair-program with AI that I think works.

Set up the parallax background functionality today -- it looks cool!
June 3, 2025 at 11:47 AM
Day 8 (June 02): Picking up pace on the prototype today. Trying to think through how to use LLMs like Claude while still learning and thinking myself.
June 2, 2025 at 2:43 PM
Day 7 (June 01): Following a 2D Godot course on Udemy today, and fleshing out the prototype.

Bit sick and hard to focus, but doing what I feel like without pushing it.

Day 6 (May 31): Decided to invest a bit more formally in the learning, and bought a few books and udemy courses that I started. I thought it would give more structure to the learning process, and if I don't have the energy to drive my own learning path I can follow one from these.
May 31, 2025 at 1:16 PM
Day 5 (May 30) A lot to do today for work and hobbies so not much time for learning Godot.
May 30, 2025 at 6:56 AM
Day 4 (May 29): Today I will focus on figuring out the LineEdit grab_focus() problem, and getting each question/answer pair to instantiate and then queue_free().If time, I'll get them to spawn and descend down space invaders style.
May 29, 2025 at 1:21 PM
Day 3 (May 28): Today I am listening to dev logs, code reviews, and starting my first prototype.
May 28, 2025 at 6:47 AM
Day 2 (May 27): Today I decided to try and learn more about scene organisation and design.

When should something be a separate scene in Godot and why?
May 27, 2025 at 7:44 AM
Day 1 (May 26): I decided today to review some programming concepts and theory that relates to gd script, explore some code review videos online, and poke around a template to use for when I do the small prototyping projects to learn.
May 27, 2025 at 7:33 AM
Day 0 (May 25): I realise that I don't have to wait until the "right time" to start this journey. I can start now, making small progress each day.

I can:
- Learn within the constraints of my present life
- Learn from the mistakes and flaws I've made so far
- Learn from my successes in other areas

Created this account to brain-dump as I (re-) start my game development journey.

I want to make a game.
I will make a game. Eventually.

Some day, I hope to look back on this account and these posts as a chronicle of where I've come from and what I've done and learned on the way.
