Landed back in Bismarck after #bostonmarathon25 and meeting some very important old dead people, wrangling witches at a gas station and romping around New Hampshire. Love the humble chaos of the northeast. Back into fossil action tomorrow (or tonight?)

Gonna attempt a Twitch stream of live fossil preparation w/Q&A - likely a short one Thursday night 8:45pm Mountain, then late night Saturday (11pm Mountain -). Look forward to a collab stream in coming months with @paleontologizing.bsky.social at his suggestion. If it all works...

@coastalpaleo.bsky.social was asked about this specimen, supposedly from the Pliocene of Eastern Montana. Some sort of big drumfish? Denver and I are a little baffled

Fresh prepped by Deanna Neff in the Clawson lab - a lovely Mioplosus labracoides from the F-1 beds of the Green River Formation, Eocene. The skull has a disarticulation yielding an undeformed frontal. Partially disarticulated fish are more useful as we get clearer views of each element.

Have been going through some rough spots lately, but those who saw my garden eel vid know that I really love animals so so much. Let this engineer goby (Pholidichthys leucotaenia) make your day by doing what he does best - chucking chunks of coral at the aquarium wall while Deanna and I laugh
