Market Basket Waltham is different, for me. In my experience -- height? weirdness magnet? -- there's a non-bagging, non-checkout, non-behind-a-counter employee approximately every three aisles, usually stocking things or moving things about. That's my impression. I will do a count next time I'm in.

Starter Villain is much more typical of his plotting; Moon is an outlier. (The other big outlier is Redshirts.)

A typical Scalzi novel is a straight-forward SF tale with one or two viewpoint characters and a classic resolution after two to three twists.

Explanations I have come up with:

* insurance says that the cost of accidents is too high

* the store will "happily" provide employee assistance, it's just that any supermarket other than Market Basket or Wegman's doesn't have enough employees to make the wait time reasonable. (I may be biased.)
