Filename length wasn't as limiting as storage. In fact you would run out of file space long before you ran out of filenames, even if the files were empty.

My parents paid $4,000 for an Apple ][ plus in 1981. That's $13,800 in today's dollars. That's nuts.

What we did was put up a "Loading..." spinner, did the full installation, then put up a 2 minute progress bar and pretended to do the installation. Progress bar was always accurate and nobody complained.
