"Nickel Boys" is a movie that critics love and audiences go .... "Huh?" Yes, director RaMell Ross pushes the art form by filming "through the eyes" of his lead characters and piecing film fragments into artful montages - but at the expense of storytelling. Be prepared to ask: "What just happened?"

In "A Real Pain," Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin portray NY cousins - each unhappy - who visit Poland, where their grandmother survived the Holocaust. The men's pain is nothing compared to grandma's, yet very real, title meaning No. 1. The other: Culkin is a Jekyll-Hyde. Human. Funny. Must-see.

"All We Imagine as Light." Wow. Masterfully made by writer-director Payal Kapadia and cinematographer Ranabir Das. Every frame seems to have been painted ... light contrasting against darkness ... and that symbolism is exactly what the story is about. One of 2024's best, now in theaters.

"All We Imagine as Light," the Cannes Grand Prize winner, is a poem written in images. Beginning almost plotlessly, it gradually meanders into the lives - and hearts - of women working at a Mumbai hospital ... and proceeds to break OUR hearts, then tenderly stitch them together again. Exquisite.

Hold on. “Oh, Mary!” is going to continue on Broadway WITHOUT Cole Escola??? “Mary” is a showcase for Cole’s VERY individual talents. There’s no “book” there for anyone else to work from, no reason other than Cole to sit through the screechifying nonsense. Without Cole, it’s going to go pfffft.

This week’s LA Phil chamber music Tuesday focused on Arnold Schoenberg, whose legacy was well served by the masterful musicians who teamed for the Transfigured Night sextet and 1st String Quartet. Violinist Bing Wang’s technique and sensitivity in the quartet were especially *chef’s kiss*

Leslie Odom Jr. including The Who’s “Christmas” from “Tommy” in his holiday set list at Walt Disney Concert Hall: Inspired. Haunting. Beautiful. A favorite moment from Sunday night’s concert.

Pasadena Playhouse’s “La Cage aux Folles” is a misguided mess. No heart. No pizazz. And except for the 3 minutes of Cheyenne Jackson’s “Song on the Sand,” no tunefulness. As in “Oh, Mary!,” director Sam Pinkleton thinks that “funny” means having actors angrily scream their lines. Nuh-uh.
