What's up #portfolioday I'm Darren and I'm a cartoonist/graphic designer double decker sandwich. Samples of my comics work are in this post and samples of my graphic design work will be in the reply!

The customer responds with "The usual - a large hazelnut green tea mocha with one pump of raspberry and one -". He is interrupted by the fourth panel which shows him opening up his wallet, which coughs. It has a couple of dollar bills and some dust bunnies. Panel five shows him holding out the bills and putting his finger in the air, sheepishly asking for "Make that one normal coffee. Black. Small." A page of comics with six panels. The first panel shows a woman wearing scuba gear and a fedora emerging from a body of water full of mannequin heads. An exclamation from off-panel says 'AQUARIUS JONES!" Panel two shows the speaker, the mayor, a short woman, continuing "but you're a private pool private eye! You're not qualified to solve a PUBLIC POOL case!" Panel three is a full body drawing of Aquarius, she has a donut-shaped floaty with a duck wearing a deerstalker cap and large flippers on her feet. She says "I may be out of my depth, but you'll find I swim just fine." Panel four shows a lineup of characters - form left to right: Aquarius, who is pointing at the mayor, a young boy with red hair, and a crudely drawn stick figure. Aquarius says "(1)It could have been you, Ms. Mayor. You were opposed to building the pool - but went with public opinion. (2)Byron here has been causing trouble all day. Murder is just a step away from running on the deck. (3) this guy is clearly from out of town." Panel five is a closeup of Aquarius pointing with her thumb to herself, smirking. "Maybe I DID IT, to give myself work!" Panel six shows Aquarius pointing behind her with her thumb to the pool she emerged from earlier. She says "But it was in fact NONE of these people. Your killer is HERE!" A page of comics with five panels. The first panel shows two cute characters in a town that all resembles Animal Crossing. One is a wolf in a ball cap and the other is a girl in a rainbow dress with pink hair and a unicorn horn. They are fishing in a tiny pond. The title text says "Mutuals by Darren Vogt and Amy Chase". The wolf is straining while pulling on the fishing pole, saying "almooooost" while the girl is covered in a glowing aura. He says "well your CALM AURA BUFF helped make the skill checks easier." Panel four shows an alert screen pop up in front of the wolf - the girl asks "everything alright?" Panel four shows the girl filtered through the Wolf's red alert screen. He says "totally awesome. Just the ol' work bell chiming." A page of comics with seven panels. Panel one shows a man being surrounded in a grimy alleyway by five guys in red and black outfits, aprons, and bandana face-masks. They are all holding pizza cutters in their hands. They say "look what we got here!" And "a slice would be nice!" The main character says "Hey guys! I don't want any trouble." Another of the hooded men says "yeah, but trouble found you." Panel two shows the boss hooded man, with a cutter and a pizza peel, saying "you're on Brick Oven Boys' turf. You better have a good reason... or we get to SLICIN'." Panel three shows a close up of the main character's eyes, and he says "I-I-I'm looking for cheese." Panel four shows the boss again, saying "well why didn't you say so? We will certainly entertain some commerce... but we'll need something in exchange, of course." Panel five shows the main character reaching into his jacket and saying "of course. I have just the thing." Panel six shows the boss looking spooked, saying "nice and easy there, hot shot." Panel seven shows the main character pulling out a toy of a gnome holding a pizza in his hands. The boss looks at it, shocked and says "is that...?" The main character confirms "yes. A genuine RUFUS ROMANO limited edition figurine. Only available at select locations during the Romano Pizza 20th Anniversary Celebration."

Corporations inspire me
A four panel page of comics. The title on top is "Corporate Bullshit #1". Panel 1 contains a big boss CEO man using a pointer to point at a drawing board. On the board are the words "Let's all EXCEL!" The man says "and now... I am proud to present our new company motto!" Panel 2 contains a close-up of the board, which is laid out in an acronym: "Every day - Xcel at your work - Customer-focused - Exude positivity - Love this job!" Pane 3 contains the man closing his eyes, looking proud, holding the Pointe in both hands. There is no dialogue. Panel 4 contains the man pointing in the air, and his eyes are slightly crossed as he excitedly says "also, starting on Monday working from home is no longer allowed."

I haven't posted enough comics lately, please enjoy the first four pages of my WIP "Graphic Designer on a Pirate Ship" - which, coincidentally, features 0 pirates (don't worry, they will appear soon)

The second panel contains a young, short man with glasses and a shoulder bag walking up to the counter of the coffee shop. A barista says "Next!" The third panel contains a closer shot of the barista and the man (who, again, looks young and small.) The barista says "Hey. What can I get you?" And the man replies "The usual - a large hazelnut green tea mocha with one pump of raspberry and one-"... The fourth panel contains the man opening his wallet, which contains two bills and a few dust bunnies. The wallet blows out air and a sound effect of "KOFF" appears above it. The fifth panel contains the man with those two bills in hand as he says "Make that one normal coffee. Black. Small." A five panel page of comics. The first panel contains a closeup of the short young man who shudders - in the distance someone is shouting "PRESTON CLANCY - is that you?" The second panel contains Preston and a new young man with an open shirt, hair in a bun and a bad mustache. Preston says "Oh, hey Jared..." His body language is awkward as Jared one-arm-hugs him. Jared says "How ARE you, man? So weird seeing you here outside of the campus art department!" The third panel contains Jared pointing at Preston. He says "It's like we never left - except now we gotta pay for our coffee with real money instead of meal plan dollars! Are you still getting those crazy coffee drinks - the special order ones with really long name-" The fourth panel contains a shot of the barista handing Preston his coffee, saying "Here's your small black coffee." Preston looks embarrassed. The fifth panel contains Preston looking down sheepishly at his cup, saying "I'm... cutting back until I can find a design gig." A five panel page of comics. The first page contains Jared, folding his arms and holding his coffee. He says "I hear ya, brother. It's a hard market out there for us designers. You've got chops, I'm sure you'll find something." The second panel contains Preston raising one eyebrow at him. The third panel contains Jared looking down and raising his hands up, saying "I tell you what, I put out what felt like 100 applications - did probably 20 interviews, and only just barely landed the job with the HBC ad agency." The third panel contains a very dramatic drawing of Jared with the back of his han to his forehead. The background is swirly and dark. He says "Hired me just as I was about to give up on graphic design." The fifth panel contains a drawing of Preston, squinting his eyes and furrowing his brow (as well as slightly crushing his coffee cup) saying "Oh yeah? HBC? Never heard of them." A thought balloon appears over his head and within is a laptop that shows an email that reads: "RE: Graphic Designer Position. Thank you for your interest in the Graphic Designer position at HBC. After reviewing your application and the qualifications of other candidates, we regret to inform you that we have decided not to move forward w..." A three panel page of comics. The first panel contains Jared looking smugly to his right, with a large box of tea super-imposed in the background to his left. There is an elaborate and colorful design on the box and tea bag (which reads: Personali-Tea. Raspberry rooibos.) He says "They have some pretty cool brands under their wing. They've got me working on a rebrand for this tea company - Personali-Tea." The second panel contains Jared pointing proudly to a different tea box that he's designed - it is entirely white, with a giant black letter "T" in the center. He says "I made it into a minimalist black and white design with a bold "T" in Helvetica. They FLIPPED for it." The third panel contains Preston, looking very unimpressed, with a thought bubble that has "..." inside of it.
