Apparently Isle Royale is the least visited national park in the country, due to it's built in remote location. I truly hope it stays that way.😉

One thing that amazed me about Isle Royale is all the volcanic rocks. They were everywhere. And in late summer there is a sweet edible berry called Thimbleberries. Delicious to a hungry backpacker

Beautiful bird. Their beak is similar to a grosbeak in Michigan

Oh that's cool. I'll bet he knew of a biologist by the name of Rolf Peterson. He's been studying the moose/wolf population on the island for 50+ years

Did you go by seaplane or by boat from Grand Portage? I think there is a much nicer boat that departs from Houghton MI. 6 hour trip though
November 29, 2025 at 4:14 AM
Trogons??
November 29, 2025 at 4:12 AM
Wow! When I was there the wolf population was down, way down. Only a few dozen left. We considered ourselves lucky to have heard them. They've come back up in numbers now. Nice n healthy

My dad spends his winters in Clifton AZ, right near the N.M. border. Pretty cool area. Gets too warm for me past April
November 29, 2025 at 4:01 AM
I just missed you, I was there for a week in Aug of '91. Heard the wolves one night across Chicken bone lake. Never forget the 4 1/2 hour boat ride from Copper Harbor on the 'Barf Barge'. 😅

Oh, and bears in Clare County as well. Just a short walk from the cabin too
November 29, 2025 at 3:18 AM
I've seen several moose while backpacking on Isle Royale, javalinas near Clifton AZ, pine martins in the Ottawa Natl. Forest in da Yooper, and Bobcats in Northern Clare County MI.
