There are people (often not very smart people) who are drawn to be part of something where they can feel important, superior to other people. They will never be a leader but they feel pride in being part of the machine. They don't analyze motivations or means. They just want to be part of it.

I should count how many time I had Holmes in disguise in my Consulting Detective series. In TCD3 I showed him developing several long term disguises and establishing his "bolt holes" where he could change them.

Not necessarily. The publishers knew women could write. They thought their readers were primarily men who wouldn't accept women writers. Ursula K. LeGuinn said her publishers tried to convince her to use a pseudonym or write in a different genre. She plowed ahead.

doing so increased conflicts with Native tribes. The colonists insisted on protection. Parliament thought they should pay for it. That's again an oversimplification but how often is that part of the story told?

I don't think "alternative narratives" is the right expression. Too long American history has been taught as a series of slogans & hero tales. The story of big bad Britain v. Colonists leaves out many important details. The continued expansion into Native lands despite prohibitions against

The irony is that many female writers wrote under initials or pseudonyms for that very reason. I didn't know for a long time that Andre Norton and DC Fontana were women.

All females. There are so many people out there who feel they have a right to tell us what we should wear, how we should do our hair and even the expressions qe should have on our face. They can't seem to understand that we aren't dolls to be adorned for their pleasure.
