:( Truly the most gutting part of fighting Makima for him wasn't her murdering every person he'd ever loved or cared about and destroying his life to torture him. He could have forgiven all of that if she'd done that because he was special to her. The horror was realizing that she never cared at all

Asa's a real girl with problems and the war devil is a real devil with an agenda and Yoru is made out of the problems and the devil getting mushed together to ensure that Asa's every waking moment is hell

Yeah! Early in the manga's run people were really into "fight club theory" and the idea that Yoru didn't exist at all but you really don't need to go that far for her to embody Asa's shadow self haunting her. It can be allegorical rather than the stupid literal "Asa made her up"

I think this works really well with a reading of Yoru as a sort of demon conjured up out of Asa’s feelings of guilt and obligation towards her mother. How much of “Yoru” is the war devil in the first place vs feelings pulled from a ghost in Asa’s head
