something something the infantilization of (Western) society as a whole and its consequences

(Simon Gottschalk has a great article from 2018 (!) about this on The Conversation: theconversation.com/the-infantil...)
The infantilization of Western culture
Our social institutions and politics suffer from a collective arrested development – and our relationship to technology has only exacerbated this trend.

so how long until the US get its mango cult?

this is worsened by the fact that, in text-based platforms like BlueSky, you're pretty damn constrained - you don't have intonation on your side, for example (and, in the case of microblogging platforms, you don't really have much of a way to show it without running out of characters!)

worst part is that this phenomenom just runs counter to communication as a whole - for someone with no prior access to the context behind what "ban cars" actually means in the movement, it would be logical that they'd assume that the phrase "ban cars" does, in fact, mean "I want to ban cars"

the only thing that I'd say is new is that the tactics people like Leafy used back in the day are no longer considered cyberbullying, but part and parcel of internet culture - with all the dangers that come from such a normalization
March 15, 2025 at 8:35 PM
not surprising in the slightest, to be honest - if there's something that gets clicks (and thus money) on the internet, it's outrage-inducing stuff

besides, I'd argue that on platforms like YouTube, this phenomenon has existed for a long time (e.g: LeafyIsHere)

truth be told, Twitter being mostly just whining has always been the case - it was due to that place's eternal whining that phrases like "cancel culture" (and its more respectable cousin "outrage culture") were coined in the 2010s

the only thing that's really changed is that it's far-right nowadays

Fighter Generations Aren't Real -- The Great Defense Site
For decades, experts have spoken of third, fourth, fifth and now sixth generation fighter jets. But do these definitions really mean anything?
