He has to practically fight Aegon to get him to go home and accept his new role. He wants it for himself as he sees Aegon as unfit to rule. The war has officially begun and both sides are waiting for the right time to strike. Aemond defends King's Landing with Vhagar at the start, to deter attacks.

This starts the escalation of the feud within the family, as Aemond's mother Alicent is furious and seeks justice for Aemond's maiming. But this is just the beginning. It gets far worse. As the two sides seethe in anger at each other, war looms on the horizon. His father dies and Aegon is crowned.

One of Rhaenyra's children gets hold of it, resulting in Aemond losing his eye. Alyssa shelters the offender by discreetly taking the dagger back, cleaning it off, and sheathing it. She then tells Aemond to stop being such a child. He resents her and Rhaenyra's children for this.

Alyssa throws him to the mercy of her sisters and Rhaenyra's older children, encouraging them to exact their vengeance. She joins the fight a minute later when he hits and pushes her sisters and calls Rhaenyra's children bastards. Her dagger falls to the ground in the scuffle.

He ends up claiming Vhagar while at Driftmark, much to the annoyance of Baela, Rhaena, and Rhaenyra's older children. He had been caught in the act by Daemon's daughter Alyssa, who defended her sister's right to claim Vhagar despite barely knowing her sisters.

Aemond Targaryen is the second son of King Viserys I Targaryen and Alicent Hightower. He wants a dragon from a young age as his siblings had dragons and he did not. He is often ridiculed for it. He wanted to do his duty and marry his sister Helaena when younger and told Aegon as much.
