Actually ✨three raccoons✨ in a trench coat, living the researcher’s dream in Northern California, doing awesome fish stuff with an excellent crew, while working to uplift voices of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ scientists, and exploring TEK/western science overlap.

One of my favorite critters: Brachiopods!
I grew up finding fossils of brachiopods from the Devonian era scattered on the shores of southern Lake Huron. When I was in my early 30s I finally got to see a living brachiopod in real life while scuba diving in Northern California.

Sheer excitement!! 🥳

We are not independent of the natural world, we are a part of it. It amazes me how many people feel so disconnected.

That air you are breathing came from a tree, the water you drink came from the river, and the food you eat grew from dirt.

Let’s do better.

Ever wonder how people fish for surf smelt? This is a technique that has been practiced by indigenous peoples in the Pacific Northwest since time immemorial. It was a beautiful summer day to be helping out with fieldwork for a grad student’s project at #CalPolyHumboldtFisheries

Hi all! I’m Katie Terhaar, M.Sc. 🦑(she/her). I am in Northern California working on sandy beach surf zone fish ecology, and on monitoring for invasive species in the Klamath River estuary. I also help out our current graduate students with their field work when needed.

Me: Tell me the truth, I’m ready.

My job: You can’t just do field work. You have to analyze the data too.

Picture of my mom, a warrior and a badass who taught me everything I need to know to make sure “having a man” in my life was an option, not a necessity
