Been reading "The Second Digital Turn - Design Beyond Intelligence" by Mario Carpo. Just got to the part where he describes Leon Battista Alberti coming up with the idea of a 3D scanner. The mechanism wasn't practical at all, but the idea for the technology has been around since Renaissance times
