Yes things were dirtier and scruffier (remember those nicotine stained interiors?). But saying that things are better now ignores the destructive legacy of Thatcherism and the huge transfer of wealth from the public to the private sector that has made many public services worse and more expensive.

But this is all pales compared to what he did to HC when his wife finally died! BTW are you reading ‘music and men’ or is there a better blog of HC? I thought it was rather trivialising and not well written.

Good if it happens, and I know TPE is a terrible in many ways but to refer to ‘trundling old trains’ when we have some of the newest trains on the network, better than for at least 30 years, and we’re in the middle of a massive Leeds-Mcr electrification and upgrade is just sloppy journalism.

I've been doing this for 40 years and always wondered if anyone else did.

Tbf, I guess having his perineum cut open with no anaesthetic might have something to do with it

She is entertainingly rude about RVWs conducting in one of her letters to Britten.

I knew string players at college who were using really valuable instruments but they were generally on loan from a trust or some rich investor.

Maybe I’ll have to give it another go. Heard the last movement on R3 (didn’t know who it was until the end) and found the fast sections metronomic and unmusical (pounding unvaried accents) and the lyrical sections too extreme a contrast to be convincing.
