A well-played chess game has an opening, a middle game, and an endgame. I am excited to know that all three of my books and the entire Game I've been imagining since I was a teenager are now available in a single volume.

But 2008 Darin wisely/foolishly said "If I'm going to write two, I may as well make this a trilogy" - and thus, over time, I wrote, edited, refined, and ultimately put out first Pawn's Gambit, then Queen's Peril, and finally, King's Crisis.

Conventional wisdom states that publishers don't want your first book, even an epic fantasy, much longer than that. That necessitated breaking my story in two: the gathering of the pieces and the playing of the game.

As I was writing, however, it became clear that the story was going to be well over 100,000 words by the time I introduced the last of my protagonists.
