I bet. I have run one-shots at cons and my flgs, and I was in a campaign that got derailed by irl stuff. Even tried to get a group put together with some co-workers that fizzled before we even started. I'm really hoping to find a new group soon.

You're not wrong about any of that. 🙂 I was thinking of the variety of games out there, as well as the seeming wider range of writers & intended audiences (e.g., LGBTQ+, POC), & there are still folks doing full free versions of their games (e.g., Mothership, Ronin, Mork Borg, Sine Nomine...).

Not sure I agree with that. I feel like the hobby just continues to grow & get ever more amazing & accessible. I look around now & see all that is out there; so much of it is leaps and bounds ahead of material that was around then. E.g.: Pirate Borg, Shadowdark, Mothership, The Electric State....

Hello Wizard, I Have a Problem

I wanted to and tried to, but the local gaming restaurant/tavern near me lost their Dungeon Masters and it didn't make sense for me to pay to DM my own game while eating food I could easily make at home. 🤷‍♂️

One of its greatest strengths is a seeming "unreliable narrator" when it comes to the lore of not only the individual games, but the world overall (except for the actual mechanics of the game). (NOTE: I'm speaking of pre-5th edition oWoD. I'm not really familiar with the rest of it.)
