Massive turnout at the #NoKings protest in Pasadena. Calm, peaceful, multigenerational crowd. Patriotic signs and American flags everywhere. I’m still waiting for my check from Soros.

Great crowd at USC for a rally celebrating our decision to say no to the Compact! A letter opposing the Compact was signed by 1500 members of our university community. @ryanboyd.bsky.social @aaup.org @sanjaymadhav1.bsky.social

My new Substack is about the paradox of the partisan happiness gap: conservatives are happier than liberals, but left-wing societies produce happier people. open.substack.com/pub/darbysax...

This post is incredibly revealing of how Trump thinks. He's apparently fine with terrorizing and dehumanizing immigrants, but when it starts to affect his wealthy friends, it's a problem. At least there's no hypocrisy here: the goal of Trump's admin has always been to serve his wealthy friends.

They even produced MAGA faves like Pam Bondi (Italian-American); Mick Mulvaney & RFK Jr. (Irish-American); Stephen Miller & Howard Lutnick (Jewish); and Donald Trump himself (German). The Irish alone brought us Sean Hannity, Megyn Kelly, Bill O’Reilly, & Steve Bannon.

Also Senator Henry Cabot Lodge:

"The immigration of people from southern and eastern Europe threatens to degrade our citizenship and dilute our national character."

These immigrants were often illiterate, stayed in their ethnic neighborhoods, and were slow to learn English.

In June 1918, German-language newspapers in Cleveland and elsewhere were censored or burned by Boy Scouts and vigilante groups.

Vandalism and attacks were reported across German-American communities in Midwest states like Wisconsin.

🧵In the early 1900s, hundreds of public schools in the midwest were taught only in German or Polish. Italian-only schools & newspapers proliferated in ethnic enclaves of New York & New Jersey. Politicians called these groups "invaders" & claimed they'd never assimilate.

Here's a bizarro-world take, but I think it's true. I (masochistically) watched Jesse Watters on Fox News defending Trump tariffs, & realized that his arguments were Ralph Nader's from 2000! At the time, Nader was arguing for more protectionism on trade, while Repubs were backing GW Bush (cont.)

I have a new Substack out today, on the new science of breastmilk timing and composition, and why it tells us that breast pumps are a poor, and particularly American, substitute for the real maternity leaves that women get in other countries.

Unreal: The Trump admin has requested info on Chinese students studying at six universities, claiming that the "student visa system has become a Trojan horse for Beijing."

Is this to divert our focus from the actual Trojan horses closer to home: @ Mar a Lago, Trump Hotel, Trump memecoin?

This, from the Heritage Foundation, is absolutely bonkers. Defund & deregulate education to boost the birth rate? In fact, as recent research has shown, family formation has dropped most among low-income women with least educational attainment.
