I read the protocol it uses is newer than ActivityPub, but I haven't found any other applications that use it.

This is precisely how the police should be doing this. Building back-doors, and crippling encryption/authentication technology is not the way forward.

I frequented one tiny forum for M.U.G.E.N characters back in the day -- literally 3, or 4, regulars, including the admin/dev. This feels kind of the same, now that you mention it.
