Convinced poor quality supermarket turkeys, overcooked to the point of dryness are the reason for most people's dislike. Plenty of tips out there to avoid this.

Goose is delicious but expensive, and, as there isn't as much meat, if you are going to need a very long bird if you are feeding a crowd which won't fit in an average oven easily.
