We’re being told (or it is being implied) that we shouldn’t make political statements right now. But here’s the thing: respecting and recognizing the humanity of our transgender brothers and sisters (and of the whole LGBTQ community) is a matter of humanity, and one I am not willing to be silent on.

We have more than enough evidence to conclude that the Trump administration
-is committed to attacking academia
-cannot be trusted to honor its commitments, nor to follow court orders
-has weaponized "fighting antisemitism" in bad faith
-will use Cornell's appeasement to go after other universities

Cornell agreed to pay $30m, hand over admissions data with demographic breakdowns, produce annual "campus climate" surveys to check on antisemitism and changes "since October of 2023," and—here's the dumbest part they agreed to—that the govt can open new investigations whenever it wants.

As an educator at Cornell, I feel like it's my duty to just say "bribes are bad, don't pay bribes".
Breaking News: Cornell University reached an agreement with the Trump administration that would restore hundreds of millions in funding to the university. It's expected to pay a $30 million fine to the government and to invest $30 million in agriculture and farming programs.
Cornell Reaches Deal with Trump Administration to Restore Research Funds
The Ivy League university had warned of layoffs after the Trump administration stripped it of funds this year. The cuts were among the deepest in higher education.

I just finished this fantastic trilogy of 80s feminist sci-fi (I’d never heard about before going to my local bookstore!) that explores a future world where the 19th amendment has been repelled [then many wacky things happen in pure 80s sci-fi style]. A good reminder of how flimsy progress is..

Why the for-profit race into solar geoengineering is bad for science and public trust
Two scientists argue that the growing commercial efforts to counter climate change by reflecting away sunlight will thwart responsible research in the field.

Ultimately, I agree I don’t expect much from founders (public & private). I prefer expecting much more from bottom-up efforts from within the community to be ethical and accountable, which is why we wrote the AGU guidelines.. www.agu.org/learn-about-...

I’ve never been shy nor ashamed of the fact that the core of my research is around SRM. I think there is merit in research: if we can show there are ways to ameliorate current and future climate change, we should know. If there aren’t, or if SRM could be used to make things worse, we should know.

I’m sure is just a coincidence, but the Syracuse Orchestra today is playing Beethoven’s Seventh, which premiered at a concert celebrating Napoleon’s defeat. He dedicated the Third to Napoleon as a champion of liberty, but ripped the dedication from the manuscript when he declared himself Emperor.

Out as preprint, we have some very interesting results looking at the radiative forcing impacts of the 2022 Hunga eruption. Based on the outcomes of the related OMIP, with many models from all over the world participating in this effort, we find a robust cooling signal from the Hunga volcanic plume.

More motivated than ever to engage with my students!😎
