Something like 30-40% of people have authoritarian or leaning-authoritarian personalities, and to those people, the idea that they should sacrifice in the name of solidarity with others outside their tribe... it's not just that they refuse, they feel the request itself as a grave insult, an outrage.

I'm sorry but this is delusional 5 years after the pandemic started, and basically 3 after it ended.
Things are no different to what they were before COVID, if you want everyone to wear a mask you need to find a cultural reasoning that has nothing to do with COVID, as that's not a factor anymore.
