My young daughter suggested that I include a photo of our dog in my class slides at the beginning of semester, “because then the students won’t realize you don’t have a life.” Ouch.

I honestly fear some of the people who hold this view might respond by saying: this seemingly bad consequence only follows on the assumption we should have public regulations and public health policies, but we shouldn’t. Let people die if God wants them to die.

Okay. I don’t mean to deny that sometimes it makes sense to promote the use of one term rather than another for something just because that way people will evaluate the thing referred to in a particular way, but I think we’re agreeing this is pretty much all we’re talking about with this debate.

I mean, suppose we don’t call listening to an audio book reading (for anyone). If we still valued experiences and skills of processing information that way highly enough, would it matter?
