An MP is a person elected by their local constituency to represent them in parliament. Sinn Fein MPs today are regarded as MPs regardless of whether they take their seats, and no by elections are held in their constituencies because they are MPs. Constance Markievicz was the first female MP.

In the old days there was a word for this - colonialism. It’s not quite identical though, since colonial powers did actually commit or fund troops to defend their extorted concessions. In modern urban areas it’s more commonly called a protection racket.
