Funny story. I was at the pet shop befriending the rats (as one does) when I saw a sign there that had the lifespans of all the different small animals.
Rats are bros, but with their short lifespans I'd be in a permanent cycle of mourning... So I "settled" for chinchillas, as they can live to be 20!
