The are 2 kinds of 🐢, cryptodira (hidden-neck turtles) & pleurodira (side-necked turtles). I think this guy with his neck retracted would beg to differ...

(North Americans also don't tend to call these terrapins, they are turtles even if they are freshwater)

I love this poster made by PhD student Zahraa Al-Baqsami. "The Recovery Station" hangs on the wall of our lab to remind us that bad days and uncertainty are normal parts of research, but not to internalize it. Fortunately no setbacks today 😅 still great to read while waiting for the centrifuge 🦠🧫

Tot de volgende keer Wageningen! Congratulations to Dr Alanna Leale, who defended her thesis yesterday on the microbial ecology and evolution of fermented foods. Thanks Alanna for also organizing a seminar for the examiners. Great to see former colleagues at WUR. Sad that it was only a short visit!

The original is linked below, which has the EXIF data. It was taken on my Canon PowerShot A80 (4.0 MP), which was a great little camera until the CCD failed and started turning all my photos pink . The figure from PLOS Biol 2008 is also mine, same camera

Controversial, but it's WWII. Penicillin was an allied discovery, Prontosil was German. Its discoverer Domagk was stopped from accepting a Nobel for it by Nazi Germany. Efforts to scale up penicillin production to treat battlefield wounds & wartime propaganda cemented penicillin in the public's mind
