Nakadai famously worked with Kurosawa, especially in those later years. But he also made films with a murderer’s row of Japanese cinematic giants. Some included Kihachi Okamoto, Masaki Kobayashi, and even Isao Takahata.

He was frequently cast opposite Toshiro Mifune. Mifune is one of the greats but honestly, it was genius to cast Nakadai against him. Truly their conflicts were the cinematic equivalent of the immovable object meeting the unstoppable force.”

Undoubtedly, Nakadai is one of my all time favorite actors. Sword of Doom is a master class in how to portray a completely amoral entity. His Ryunosuke Tsukue is pure evil, barely human, and utterly magnetic.

Tatsuya Nakadai passed away at 92. 92 is a very full life but dear lord, it still feels like a huge loss.

Very excited these bad boys are coming to my house today. This, Hellboy, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and Grant Morrison-era JLA were my high school superhero Four Horsemen.

This afternoon’s line up are all three A Better Tomorrow films. Chow Yun-fat lighting a cigarette with a $100 and saying with total conviction “I believe I am God”. No way this guy wasn’t gonna be a megastar after this movie.

I’ve goofed around with Kirby pencils in my free time lately to get back in the art groove. Here’s my digital inks, colors, and Dark Throne inspired logo for The Demon #1.

It’s crazy to me we got this and Jonathan Lethem’s Omega the Unknown (drawn Farel Dalrymple and Gary Panter!!!) within a few years of each other. It’s a shame the current Marvel isn’t bothering to take these kinds of risks.

Reread this over the weekend and was glad that it remains one of the key texts of 00s Marvel for me. Crazy that this exists at all but glad it does. Disappointed this isn’t a key backlist title for them and honestly a shame it’s not in print.
