Wilbur, this morning!
September 25, 2025 at 1:06 PM
Happy Miniature Schnauzer Day!

I asked Google “What’s your favorite dog?” and it came back with Miniature Schnauzer—like our Wilbur.

A+ to whoever trained this LLM. 🧑‍💻🐾

Does your smart assistant agree?

Wilbur hopes you get well soon!

Rai was a true scientist: curious, rigorous, and deeply committed to the pursuit of knowledge. He was also an incredible mentor who inspired those around him with his generosity, wisdom, and unwavering support. His impact on the world was enormous and he will be deeply missed.

My attempt with Copilot.

Now imagine doing this with sensitive data. Or making critical decisions.

We are thrilled at Purdue University about Rubin Observatory’s First Look presentation! 🤩

We set up a Photo Booth to take selfies with the new data.
June 23, 2025 at 4:08 PM
Important slide during the presentation. All three components are vital for the success of Rubin Observatory’s mission: the swift, wide-field telescope, the enormous camera, and the massive computational resources needed to process 20 TB of data per night.

Quick and *very rough* comparison between newly revealed Rubin Observatory data and existing DESI Legacy Imaging Survey data.

Rubin’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time is gonna rock! 🤯

TODAY is the day! Witness the release of images from the NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory at 11am ET, then at noon hear from the Purdue experts who helped make it possible. We are Indiana’s only public watch party!

Or when online small businesses bring bonding moments between friends! Here I’m with @orifox.bsky.social at STScI, just after we realize we are both wearing @sciencesocks.bsky.social socks!

Just watched this story about #AAS246 on local news station Your Alaska Link, filmed earlier today. I am one of the participants interviewed.

Thank you Max Treece-Noran for taking the time to share this with the public. And thank you random astronomer who I asked to take some of these photos. 📸 🔭

During my talk at #AAS246 I was delighted to premiere our latest Team SUPERNOVA! group photo.

The Force is strong with these students at Purdue University!

Thanks to grad student Danielle Dickinson for doing the layout.

Plenary talk by William McKinnon at #AAS246 is getting me excited for the NASA Europa Clipper mission! Scheduled to arrive March 7, 2031. What will its ocean contain? Biological life? He says “follow the nitrogen!”

I had a wonderful chat with University of Arizona grad student Neev Shah for this astrobites interview that preludes my plenary talk at #AAS246 on June 9.

Very interesting article and associated Nature paper of a long period transient observed in X-ray and radio that suddenly activated.

Great story on NBC Nightly News tonight on the images of astronaut Don Pettit. Made me aware of a recent article in @nytimes.com. Beautiful, inspiring work from the ISS

May edition of @astronomymag.bsky.social has an AMAZING image of the Perseus Galaxy Cluster made by community observers! The composite represents 392 hr of total exposure time across 19 imagers with apertures between 2.7 to 11 inches. Credit to @lislisette.bsky.social and the Overall Photons team!

Came home from a trip to beautiful, snow-laden Quebec City, and arrived at a beautiful, snow-laden #Purdue campus!

The episode of The Whole Story with Anderson Copper titled “The James Webb Telescope: Are We Alone?” replayed tonight on CNN International. It remains available on-demand to stream with HBO MAX.

Lots of fun reliving that first year when we started to explore Webb data. Wild times. Great documentary

🚨🚨🚨Legendary volunteer astronomer Koichi Itagaki strikes again! 💥🔭

Discovery of an extremely young core-collapse supernova SN 2024abfl in nearby galaxy NGC 2146. Same galaxy hosted SN 2018zd, with lots of Hubble Space Telescope data to inspect for a potential progenitor star. 🤩

LET’S GO!!!!!

Group photo taken in front of the amazing new Chandra-Webb-Hubble-Spitzer image of my fav object of the universe, Cassiopeia A. I love this group of Purdue students and friends at #AAS243

Be sure to stop by the Chandra booth to collect some swag supporting the Line Emission Mapper X-ray mission.

Thrilled to finally share our new paper that provides an overview of our JWST survey of supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. Approximately 7 years of planning + effort went into this. Figure 3 is one of my favorites, and serves as a storyboard for the many discoveries we made.
