Predating the EU, the CTA (Common Travel Area) is an agreement that allows citizens between the UK, Ireland, Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands to move freely and without restrictions within this area.

For example, the French passport can only allow you up to 180 days in the UK. Conversely, the UK passport can only allow you up to 90 days in the EU. The Irish passport has no such restrictions. This is thanks to Ireland being both part of the EU and the CTA.
