I’d also just add that it’s easy to assume the motive for one member one vote is cynical party data machines but it’s been a pretty strong demand of party members for a long time as many can’t afford conventions and don’t like delegating their vote to only those with the resources or funding.

Beyond that, the smaller number of people voting in total means you need to control far few individuals’ votes in order to swing the results of the election. The difference between Dion and Kennedy being LPC leader in 06 was effectively less than 100 votes.

I’m actually not sure that delegated conventions are better on that front. The cost of attending means many delegates are subsidized by organizers which creates large groups of folks who can be influenced pretty directly by an individual without understanding their motives.
