A modern parable

At least Opta and UEFA agree on shots
but they dont agree on passes even if its <1% difference
November 5, 2025 at 9:03 PM
Opta distance covered on fotmob vs UEFA's in-house provider.
More than 6km difference on Real's total. That's half a player and outside a +/- 5% margin of error. Crazy that different providers can push this stuff out to fans #UCL #championsleague #uefa

+15 in 7 seasons in all comps where data recorded.
As I said, that's his value add, an extra 2 goals per season
Neutral this season tho so lets hope he pays dividends in the winter/spring from here

I've seen hundreds of #lfc pass networks but never one like this.
New and exciting!

Watching Prime Vision is a perfect evolution for a nerd like me.
22 player ball tracking at all times plus popups for sprint speeds, distances, XG, xSave, possession values and more

Regulars will know that we publish a statspack for each game.
Using the Monte Carlo for each match we can create an xPoints model.
When you look at the 9 games in totality you can see the absolutely wild journey #lfc have taken to end up exactly where we deserve to be based on our performances

In this game it looks like Conor Bradley was the primary target of the Brentford gameplan.
Kelleher and Ajer to Schade who won 6/7 aerials. Bradley only 2/9...

Brentford targeted Bradley...
Conor was 2/9 on aerials, Schade was 6/7

Thanks to ball-in-play time data from the 365Scores app, here's the Duel Frequency of #LFC matches plotted in a control chart.
More clear trends this season starting on opening day
October 27, 2025 at 6:44 PM
Couple of follow-up charts to my substack post from last week.
You may have seen that Brentford forced more duel situations than the Goodison Derby last season
October 27, 2025 at 6:42 PM
Just in terms of the chances
October 25, 2025 at 11:59 PM
Jones has been significantly better than Mac in every single game this season.
If he's on the bench for Brentford I may not be responsible for my actions #lfc
October 22, 2025 at 9:21 PM
The aerial duels is just 1 symptom of the wider problem which is opponents spamming our defensive third with every kind of direct play they can.
We're handling the first ball as well as we can, its the 2nd and 3rd phases that are the bigger issue!
October 22, 2025 at 5:27 PM
Personally I think this dates back to the Carabao final and Goodison derby last season. That was the only opponent style that we were in any way weak to and it just snowballed.
But there are wider league trends at play as well such as this
October 22, 2025 at 5:23 PM
So I took a look at all the data I could find that indicates "directness".
Fair to say that opponents have significantly changed how they play #LFC this season.
And while we continue to have bad outcomes in terms of goals conceded, opponents will continue to do exactly the same thing.
October 22, 2025 at 5:19 PM
XG difference in each Game State.
Arsenal have improved but still a step below #lfc last season.
Meanwhile LFC have lost their superpower and have no control over games.
October 13, 2025 at 8:19 PM
% of PL matches spent in each Game State
#LFC and #AFC last 2 seasons
Arsenal virtually unchanged, #LFC 30% lower
October 13, 2025 at 8:16 PM
And a lot more than last season. It's only typically centre forwards who have a negative pass OBV
Ibou actually has the highest pass% in the team with 91.5% , its just that his incompletions are worse than before
Here's the lowest pass OBVs in the PL this season
October 8, 2025 at 9:59 PM
It's about £6k a year cheaper than a hudl license...
You also get the pressures that used to be on fbref plus xPassing and their XG data
October 8, 2025 at 9:45 PM
Doesn't it make you ponder about why a player can have 2k progressive metres (and 29 PP) yet an overall negative pass OBV?
@gregoryjanks.bsky.social
October 8, 2025 at 9:40 PM
This is an example of what you get (last season PL)
October 8, 2025 at 8:36 PM
I think this factor is huge.
OBV is the only metric that subtracts as well as adds and we've seen a lot more of the big negative events this season
