Oakland is out for May Day.

Workers of the world, unite!

Against capitalism, against fascism, against all attacks on human rights.

Our power is in solidarity.

Does anyone have digital/online neuroanatomy reference texts they like? Papers are great, but textbooks and atlases are just better for some things.

I typically just dig out my old physical books, but I realized there are probably more convenient alternatives.

Most news is bad news these days, but I was excited to see this morning that the new Vulfpeck album is finally out.

If anyone needs me, I'll be dancing at my desk.

I've been recording sound levels (dB) to gather evidence on a noisy neighbor (to take to the landlord).

Accidentally discovered that cat purring (the little baseline waves) oscillates in amplitude with a period longer than single breaths.

Science is cool. Cats are cool. Cat science is cool.

Mom thought tonight was the first night of Hanukkah.

She was mistaken, but latkes are never a mistake.

Full house this afternoon at the UC Berkeley neuroscience seminar for a fantastic talk and discussion with @nicolecrust.bsky.social about what kind of “thing” the brain is and how we should go about trying to study, understand, and develop treatments for it.

Starting a petition to require that all new papers containing fMRI task activation maps must report their results using the same kind of delightful descriptions found in this series of preprints form @twoodward.bsky.social's group www.theurlist.com/wcmpapers

Pleased with this little desk timer I got for doing writing sprints.

Satisfying little clicky dial to set duration, and can automatically start a second timer (e.g. for breaks) after the first finishes (Pomodoro style).

After a rough week, self care includes fancy breakfast: “Lava eggs” (soft scrambled over rice) with grilled pork jowl and crispy fried garlic (At Tanzie’s in Berkeley www.tanziescafe.com, strong recommend!)

Dressed up for Halloween this year (for the first time in ages) as a "mad" scientist, complete with a list of things (written on my lab coat) to be mad about.

Big crowd up in Tilden park in Berkeley to try to catch the Auroroa. Not visible to the naked eye, but faint pink on long exposure. Going to wait and see if it improves.

Great session on degeneracy in neural systems. Eve Marder talking about how perturbations can uncover "cryptic" degeneracy, with a fascinating (but sad) example of how warming oceans may influence how lobster ganglion cell dynamics respond to temperature perturbations.

Just tried to post this same message on Twitter and got a notification telling me to be more active so they can make sure I'm a human. Apparently if I don't, my posts won't show up in search.

I have had the same Twitter account since 2004.

Good way to reinforce my decision not to post there. 🙃

Planing your SFN itinerary?

Come see me talk about how fundamental properties of BOLD time series change systematically over time during "rest", and how these changes follow a common sensorimotor-association axis.
