In 1933, the Schutzstaffel, known as the SS, was just Hitler’s personal bodyguard unit. By 1939, it had become the most feared arm of Nazi Germany’s machinery of repression. They wore black, carried unchecked authority, and answered to one man, not to the law, but to ideology.
