On the way to the TaNC Conference. 'Avanti' West Coast defying low expectations to get out of frozen London only 20 minutes late so far...

Contractually obliged to show Bletchley Park environs, which are not as pretty as Scotland.

Long Island, seen from Brooklyn (not that one) at dusk.

Final session of #AHA24, suitably optimistic about the need for historians to be part of building a data science that works for the world, with @kmcdono.bsky.social and @nolauren.bsky.social in particular knocking it out of the park. 🗃️

Quick visit to the Center for the Book, where movable type and beautiful book-binding still alive, before a panel on the automation of work. #AHA24 🗃️

Very humbling to pick up the Roy Rosenzweig award at the #AHA24 last night among such brave and inspiring scholars, often under physical attack for doing public history. Proud of our ‘MapReader’, but seems a bit trifling by comparison. 🗃️

So glad that public institutions in France do not (yet) see coffee as an opportunity to gouge addicts. Also: no discrimination based on size or type 👍

Great to be back at the BnF after many years, here for the final workshop of the impressive SoDUCo project on the c19 history of cities. In their case, Paris; in mine, learning new methods for working with British directories.

Passing Bletchley Park at 125mph is the closest I’ll get to the AI summit today. Not sure which of Sunak or Musk is most desperate to save their career. Fireside chat on X not a great look. Prepare for Musk to blame everyone else. Glad Connor Leahy is in the room; Nick Clegg, not so much.

I thought I couldn’t have any more love for Radio France, but then I saw their new T&Cs on curation and privacy (tl;dr: it’s done by hand not algorithm)

Brooding sky at Bawdsey Manor in Suffolk where I met a surveyor measuring dramatic coastal erosion. This gothic Victorian building, crucial site of WW2 development of Radar, looks likely to be swallowed by the North Sea.

Happy to publish in *Technology & Culture*, having read so much amazing work there over the years. Hoping History & STS will engage with the question of language models. Thanks to my wonderful co-authors. Explanatory 🧵 was here: zirk.us/@LivingWithM...

Another day, another platform! I don't have a cat, but can share a picture of this tree in Essex I'm often looking at, in front of some bsky this week.
