Finished it! This book grew on me as the plot progressed. I felt empathy for the troubled but ingenious and insightful protagonist. Enjoyed thoroughly.

On thing I discovered, this is the second book in a series. Next, I will read the first, "A test of Wills".

I'm not sure about when to prune roses. I saw somewhere on bluesky, someone was planting bare root roses now. I guess we will find out in the Spring, if I'm doing the right thing! I think they will be OK.

I think the biggest risk is if they start growing before the last heavy spring frost.

They are getting ready for winter 😀

I started pruning some of mine. The rose garden got out of hand this year. It will take some work to get them back into shape.

Condolences. It's a very sad day. I have experienced the loss of two dogs. Even though they had long lives, for dogs, it tore me up. Peace and serenity to you and your family.

Cheapest can openers I could find, roughly $.50 a piece. Most bulk ones run closer to a dollar. But do people know how to use them?

Thank you for posting this. It's can be a challenge to decide what to buy.

I will look for cheap can openers like the p38s they used to issue with army C-rations. Most canned goods don't have can openers.

I think that's a good idea to keep trying. I wonder if it is own-root, instead of grafted. I bet it is. Own-root takes much longer but eventually gets there. Grafted ones are more likely to have viral disease.

I have three grafted David Austin roses with rose mosaic virus. Frustrating.

It does bring tears.

My mother told me that she named me this song. She was moved by it too.

Both are nice. I like summer best.

$$$ can go for food, but also fundraising, facilities, other things. I understand they have to pay for building, utilities, upkeep, and probably some salaries. I've just felt too burned in the past from contributing $$. Plus then spam texts and emails start coming because charities share lists.

I have mixed feelings about giving money. My own preference is to give food. So far, they still accept food donations here.
