We measure the surface texture before and after use from scans taken with focus variation microscopy, and use multiscale geometric analyses to determine if the surface textures are measurably different

In this study we conduct a series of experiments using shell tools to determine whether is it possible to distinguish different types of contact materials from surface traces (photos of hands doing the messy work)

I am particularly interested in #lithics, and how we can learn about past human behaviors through understanding their function. This has lead me to work with engineers to identify tool function through applying methods developed for surface metrology to archaeological objects.

My research is mostly focused on the transitions from hunting-gathering to the origins of agriculture, with a interest in hunter-gatherers before the Neolithic. I direct fieldwork projects in Jordan and Cyprus, working on Epipalaeolithic sites.
