Coming on here real quick to say I LOVE MY BOOKS!!!! Not that many people have read them, and they're not perfect because I have to do everything myself, but I am BEYOND proud of them. These characters mean the world to me, and writing the last book in this series hurts so good. It's almost over...😭

#WIPSnips Day 31: surprise (from Drop Dead 3)

*spoilers!
How do you feel? I ask. He tries to speak, but his throat is dry. He coughs, winces. If you think the pain is bad now…just wait. It’s a dreadful, awful thing to think now, when he’s just woken up. I should be overjoyed. There should be tears; I should be on my knees…but there were so many tears while he slept. While he turned. I’m not sure I have any left. I feel empty. Drained, exhausted. It’s been two days since I slept. I wouldn’t leave his side. I still haven’t. I still won’t. As for joy…well… Let’s see if he kills me before we get ahead of ourselves. He looks up at me, squinting, unsteady. Sleep-flushed and warm. Roses in his brown cheeks, speckles of blood like little red freckles across his face. Beautiful, I can’t help but think. His eyes are black. Bottomless pits through which something new in him is looking out at the world for the first time. Something just born and beginning to stretch its claws. “Hungry.” It doesn’t surprise me. Slowly, I nod. I’ve been ready for this. “Okay,” I say. “Then let’s get you something to eat.”

#WIPsnips Day 28: "Stay" (from Drop Dead 3)
“Someone is at the house.” Simon, who had been trailing behind before, suddenly appears at my side, protective fingers digging into the flesh of my arm. His eyes focus sharply on the cabin, listening and watching. “Stay here,” he says after a moment, and begins to walk swiftly, silently toward the house. Well, if it is a hunter, I’m not about to let him go by himself. I start to follow, but Simon stops and turns back, giving me a serious look. “It could be Bill.” It’s probably the only thing he could have said that would manage to stop me…and it does. For a second or two. “If it is…” I falter, my nerves pricking. “You’ll know before I do, and you can warn me. Or stop me. But we don’t know who’s up there, so you’re not going by yourself. Fuck that.” Simon hesitates, his eyes all over my face. Last night, I pushed him away, didn’t want to talk, wouldn’t sleep in the same room as him. Tonight, I woke him up to go hunting with me, and now I’m not letting him out of my sight. He must be confused. That makes two of us. “Fine,” he relents. “But stay close to me. Just in case.” I nod and obediently step closer, right next to him. Close enough that, even with our hands at our sides, we’re almost touching. Even though he told me to do it, Simon’s eyes widen slightly. He stares at me in silence for a moment, then, stammering, says, “Good. Okay. Good…” As he turns and starts to walk toward the cabin, I follow right on his heels. I’m trying to focus on my surroundings, to be aware of any possible hunter traps, but his heart is beating so loudly I can’t hear anything else.

“Shit… Why didn’t you tell me right away?” “Simon thought you had enough to worry about.” “Yeah, that sounds like him…” There’s a rubbing sound, like Darrell might be massaging his forehead, and he sighs. “Shit. You should have told me.” “Yeah, probably… I’m sorry.” “No, don’t apologize…” Darrell mumbles. “Not after coming all this way with me… I just… What are we gonna do with him? We can’t carry him around the hospital. And if something happens to him...” Bay sounds surprised. “I thought you wanted to be free of him.” “Not anymore…” Darrell mumbles, admitting to her what he never ever would if I were awake and obviously listening. “I like him, but that’s not even what I mean. It’s—unthinkable. It’s painful to even think about…losing him. Not seeing him.” “Yeah,” Bay whispers. “When Helen’s people found out I wanted to be a servitor, they tried to tell me how powerful the attachment was. They told me I would rather die than give him up. I don’t think I believed them. But I do now. It kind of scares me…” “It scares me too.” There’s silence for such a long time that mind begins to drift away again, to fall back into deep sleep. Then I’m jerked back toward the surface—still not really awake but somewhat aware again—by the feeling of someone’s hand lightly stroking my hair. “We could use a wheelchair and pretend he’s a patient,” Bay says. “Okay,” Darrell says, sounding closer to me than she does. “I’ll stay with him.” Bay hurries off, and the pleasant kneading of Darrell’s fingers in my hair is the last thing I know for a long while.
