There are worse places in the world to be putting the finishing touches to an album, that's for sure 😊

In all the many years I have been coming to West Somerset, this has been the sunniest and loveliest autumn I can remember.

Excited to see this lovely bunch again tomorrow for rehearsals ❤️

One of a series of atmospheric photos shot by Naishu Shah of myself and the band performing live at the Victoria, Dalston, London, on our spring tour last year.

Not long until we announce some more shows 😉

Devastated to hear that Edmund White, my favourite author, and the chronicler of a generation, has passed away at 85. I’ll forever be grateful for his work. #EdmundWhite

A poem I wrote, yesterday.

Happy Record Store Day! 🎶 Some pics from our Holt Vinyl Vault gig in Norfolk last year. Fingers crossed we'll be back for a full evening show soon! If you're in Norfolk, check out Andrew’s store—he’s keeping the true indie spirit of RSD alive, away from all the hype. #RSD2025

The second draft of my book is done! Elevator pitch: it’s a memoir about surviving homophobia & depression in the 1990s with the help of literature, good friends, and the Cocteau Twins.

(Now it goes into a virtual drawer for a few months rest before I start a final draft with fresh eyes...)

Sigourney Weaver in "The Tempest": Early reviews were brutal; it’s either improved or the backlash was overblown. Impressive production actually, and Prospero’s final scenes were unexpectedly moving. Good, cheap tickets remain still—100% worth seeing in London.

Lovely, lovely Brian Eno at the launch of "What Art Does" last night. My 5th or 6th time seeing him talk (also saw a rare live performance in 2006 at Bath). I've long been as much a fan of his ideas as his music, and have been awaiting his book on culture since 2005. (My book review coming shortly).

20 albums that influenced you (#20)

Deacon Blue: "When The World Knows Your Name"

This is where it all began for me—the first music that felt "mine." Hugely underrated band. Ricky Ross’s literary, political lyrics are peerless, and Ewen Vernal's bass playing tops Tony Levin’s, for me.

In 2024, I set a goal to spend some dedicated time with new music each day; to give my full attention to an album or EP I'd never heard before. It pushed me to explore music I’d overlooked or never heard. Out of the things released in 2024 that I listened to, these are my favourites.

Books of 2024, Part 2: Poetry loves included Richard Scott's "Soho", Romeo Oriogun's "Sacrament of Bodies", Ada Limón’s "Bright Dead Things", and Sharon Olds' "Stag's Leap". Revelation of the year? Virginia Woolf's complete diary—3500 pages of history, creativity, and insight. An absolute treasure.

Books of 2024, Part 1: Hit my annual 50-book target. Continued Powell's "A Dance to the Music of Time"—a masterful, lifelike 12-volume series. Maupin's "Tales of the City" series—warm tales of chosen family. Also diving into Vidal with Kaplan's bio (and starting his Narratives of Empire series)...

Choose 20 books, with a sentence explaining why it stayed with you (#19)

David France — "How To Survive a Plague"

My undergrad dissertation explored AIDS in US fiction, a lasting interest that’s inspired a few songs. While imperfect, this offers a solid timeline of the crisis from a US perspective

20 albums that have influenced you (#19)

Brian Eno — On Land

1996: As a music theory student, the idea that "music" could include such "unmusical" environmental sounds was a profound disruption. A genius record that was sadly overlooked at the time. I'm publishing an essay on this soon.

Choose 20 books, with a sentence explaining why it stayed with you (#18)

Milan Kundera — "The Book of Laughter & Forgetting"

A lyrical, haunting exploration of memory, politics, and identity, where personal & historical betrayals intertwine in beautifully layered prose.
