My daughter and I are obsessed with Patrick O'Brian's "Master and Commander" books. There is much drinking of grog in these books, so we whipped up a batch. Not bad, though quite apt to make you start belting out sea shanties at the top of your lungs if you indulge in more than a single glass.

In these trying times , I keep thinking about people I've written about. Today I'm thinking of Sarah Graves, who, starving, hiked her way over the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the winter of 1846 to tell the world of the tragedy unfolding at Donner Lake. If she could do that, maybe I can survive Trump.
