Mouthwashing

Who knew the game about pain would be a painful experience. It's a visceral story about objectification, how capitalism and misogyny compound on each other. You'll find a picture of Jimmy under the dictionary entry of "scumbag protagonist".

Krile, as always, remains adorable. She carries the biggest, most unexpected Lalafell lorebomb ever. Her narrative was quite circular in a meaningful way, in the sense she ended up right back where she started but with the answers she was looking for.

I expected the game to turn me around on my first impressions of Bakool Ja Ja and boy, did it. He is darker timeline Wuk Lamat, if she had been raised by a parent who demanded more and loved less of her. I hope Yoshi-P lets us reimburse him those 800k gil.

Koana by far takes the #1 spot of best older brother in the game. He only takes the one L because he needed Thancred, a historically absolute emotionally constipated mess of an older brother in his own right, to teach him how to be a better and more open-minded brother.

It's impossible to talk about Sphene without talking about the entire story, or gushing about Fate/Grand Order: Cosmos in the Lostbelt. Much like Emet-Selch, she is someone whose political actions make her extremely delicate to discuss but fun to analyze. She's at the center of gender analysis here.

Erenville and Cahciua are probably my favorite part of the expansion. It's the most complex parent-child relationship in the game thus far, and the one I've found the most moving. They're all about how our predecessors can be flawed even with all their abundant love towards us.

Wuk Lamat is a great expansion protagonist. I found her choices, outlook, and behavior throughout the story communicated its themes really well. It was nice to see her evolve from the bravado-projecting insecure princess into the confident and outspoken ruler who reaches out to others.

I don't think there was anyone in the main or supporting cast I didn't like, with the exception of the so-far one-dimensional Sareel Ja. It's just some characters stick out more than others. It speaks to the overall strong character writing this time around.

Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail

A really good expansion IMO, divisive in all the ways I'd expect an XIV expansion to be, especially politically. Still, it does what FFXIV does best and hit you with some devastating narratives about loss and moving on with an embedded conversation on gender roles.
