I think this direction is WotC's way of subtly moving away from the Chinese influences. On one end, I think that they could've kept it and just refined the lore/presentation (keeping the flavourful roots). Alternatively, the more generic "intoxication" route gives players more freedom.

In addition to cool system agnostic movement and combat rules for land vehicles, Scorched Basin has some really neat features that you don't see in a lot of TTRPG products. They're going to have an ASL based sign language, which teaches people to sign! www.kickstarter.com/projects/hom...
