Scottish PhD 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 living in Finland 🇫🇮 | Disease Ecology | Postdoc with ReWetFor & BEPREP projects at Uni of Helsinki | Amateur art historian.
It was great to attend the BEPREP midterm meeting, hearing from partners in Europe, Africa, South America and Asia. #disease #restoration #global #interdisciplinary #collaboration #BEPREP #horizon

I should start a new business... making beer for mosquitoes. Homemade C02 bait from beer yeast. This allows us to understand the ecology of this infamous vector... including species assemblage, relative abundance, and act as sentinels for disease detection. #ReWetFor #Homemade #mosquitoes

Look at this beautiful specimen, we caught her waiting to jump on a juicy deer... Black-legged ticks (Ixodes ricinus) are recognised as a main vector of Lyme disease and Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE). #ReWetFor

Perks of doing in Swedish forests. Blueberry tarts.

Let's see what we can hear.
Bats and bad recorders deployed ✅
Complexity in soundscapes can act as an indicator of biodiversity complexity. We can also pinpoint behavioral events e.g., feeding in bats. All of this can be put into a disease context... Watch this space.

You catch more flies with honey than vinegar... WRONG. The trick is a mixture of beef and pork mince left too long in the sun. We are using these little sentinels to monitor biodiversity #iDNA

Currently in Sweden mapping multispectrum images of 20 sites prior to Wetland restoration. This will give us multiple indices of habitat complexity, health and moisture etc. at 5 cm scale. #ReWetFor #disease ecology

Who knew textiles lessons in high school would come in handy.

Four fly pyramids ready to catch carrion flies for iDNA studies before and after Wetland restoration. Wish me luck hunting. #ReWetFor #onehealth

And we will see if wetland restoration will protect these functions or open up new functional pathways in Sweden. #ReWetFor

‘Biodiversity is not declining’ is a claim you may have heard. But science says otherwise. 📉

The @ipbes.net #GlobalAssessment reveals 1 million plant & animal species are at risk of extinction. Misinformation clouds the crisis.

What a great trip to Puumala, the namesake of PUUV (Orthohantavirus) in Lakeland, Finland? The ideal surroundings for myself and the other two new postdocs of the Ecke lab to settle in.

The first week of the postdoc completed ✅
besides meeting my amazing new colleagues and exploring Helsinki (especially the art galleries)... Mämmi, a traditional dessert often eating around Easter is a strong highlight.

Towards a ‘people and nature’ paradigm for biodiversity and infectious disease | Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences
Zoonotic and vector-borne infectious diseases are among the most direct human health consequences of biodiversity change. The COVID-19 pandemic increased health policymakers’ attention on the links between ecological degradation and disease, and sparked ...

More conferences should consider doing a waiver buying scheme... Sounds like a great idea to me.
📢Reminder that the early bird registration for the 2nd Women in Malaria Online conference is closing Feb 14, 2025 (50 USD)! Fee waiver applications are available for LMICs & you can also buy fee waivers for others. Register/apply here: womeninmalaria.es/wim-conferen... Please re-share 💛

End of an era... I defended my PhD yesterday. Thanks to my examiners, especially @aivelo.bsky.social for coming all this way and putting up with the British system haha. Obviously, thanks to my amazing supervisor Sandra Telfer who is a star and now the benchmark of my career ambitions. #PhD

As always our "resident artist" has produced a beautiful summary of @aivelo.bsky.social talk today.
A lovely seminar from Tuomas @aivelo.bsky.social on the work of the Helsinki Urban Rat Project, featuring the work of a historian (History), visual artist (Niche), many school kids (Rat Tracks), and, of course, an ecologist. Covering loads of different aspects of rats in cities.
